An album that has always felt like ESPG’s child…. that emotional rawness and vulnerability in the lyrics. Hits all the spots. Concrete and Gold, and its title track, are a damn masterpiece.
This is a brilliant album, sadly under-appreciated by all the fans who just want them to write nothing but different takes on "Monkey Wrench." Say what you want about Kurstin's later influence, but in this one he really got the band to stretch their legs. Taylor's drumming is transcendent, and I feel like we finally got to hear who he really is behind the kit, a finessed and subtle player. The title track is absolutely UNREAL. I've said it before and I'll say it again, when Dave sings, "I have an engine made of gold," I swear he's talking about Taylor. RIP.
The video for "Run" is HILARIOUS. Who else noticed that all of Pearl Jam are in the audience, in geriatric makeup? Eddie Vedder is the one in the opening shot. It's got to be him. Who else would climb up a balcony and jump off like that? An obvious reference to his stage antics back in the day. Comedy GOLD. And the bong blast? OMG. A couple other of Dave's celebrity friends have cameos too. I think his mom might be the one with the oxygen mask, but the shots are so quick and blurry it's hard to tell for sure. I can't believe the band has never commented on this.
On this tour I saw them from the barrier at the "semi-hard" open (iykyk) of The Anthem in DC in October 2017. It's one of the best venues in the country to see any show—up there with Red Rocks and The Ryman. They played a bunch from this record, absolutely slayed the joint, and clearly had a blast doing it. One of the best concerts I've ever seen, full stop.
Later on that tour, in a contest they co-sponsored with Harley-Davidson, I won a trip to see CalJam 18. I and the other finalists were treated like royalty by the H-D and CalJam folks. Dave, if you ever read this, thanks for liking my "Concrete and Gold"-themed tank ("This freedom machine rickrolls haters and forces them to surrender."), and for the whole experience! I'm hard pressed to think of anything that could be more fun to do…with a broken leg. ;)
…and so we enter the me finding Foo era! Sorry I was a bit late to the party guys…
I bought C&G having acquired tickets for Melbourne 18, himself wanted to go and I said Foo who? 🤣 (I lived under a prog rock for years but had heard LTF many times but never knew who it was by) anyhoo, I got the album and fell in love with it instantly from Run to the Floyd vibes of the title track. Now that doesn’t often happen with me so I knew this was good.
Excitement for the gig was raised! I had 3 shows that week a Genesis pro tribute, Jason Bonham and Foos. Two were postponed and then oh heck, things come in threes so was praying nothing would canx Foos! All was good and the show blew me away! Sadly Mel was the last Aussie show as I’d have moved heaven and earth to go again. Just had to wait until 19 for Dublin and Glasgow during a trip back home.
I know it sounds crazy but that album and show really did change things so much, getting into Foos, travelling to see you guys and the wonderful friends I’ve made has been priceless! I have since made up for my lack of Foo in the previous years, hope I’m forgiven…
Remember waking up in Reykjavik, Iceland knowing something was coming that evening in June of 2017. Little did I know I would hear some of the first songs off this album under the midnight sun and walk away with one of T’s sticks. Incredible album and concerts around it.
Oh me too! I heard about 17 CJ from friends so thought sod it, let’s go to US for 18 and then I saw the date…. damn, work commitment I couldn’t get out of (being a wedding photographer lol) so for 19 I kept that weekend free and they didn’t do it again 😭 I was so looking forward to a full Foo and friends fest!
I can't believe super bowl Saturday 2018 isn't mentioned in this era. A venue was built just for their show. Cool memorabilia set up that I enjoyed seeing. They rolled out the red carpet for us fans and it was the best concert experience EVER!! They left us prizes in lockers and even took pictures with us in the stands. Thank you Foos!!!

Thank you for being you!
I was there in Austin for Kiss guy! Truly incredible moment. Second best Foos concert I have been to (first being the LA Taylor tribute concert).

I remember when CalJam17 was announced I lost my mind at that lineup. Incredibly fun day! CalJam18, insane follow up. Wish it continued.

Run is my #1 song. Seeing it live at the C&G Richmond show opener, 10000000/10
Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, & Liam Gallagher? I should’ve been there 😿
